Rick has been a licensed psychologist in Colorado since 2002 when he first opened up his private practice. he received his B.A. in psychology from Bowdoin College, M.S. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Oregon, and Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver.
Having first been exposed to strength-based, solution-focused, systems oriented, and narrative therapy just after college while working in community mental health, he became committed to the belief that people's strengths, both known and undiscovered, where the keys to allowing humans to overcome obstacles and thrive. Rick became interested in how the stories people create for themselves, and are created for them by their contexts, keep them stuck or allow them to grow and heal. His clinical work is a great passion for him, and he loves walking with clients as they courageously work to create change. Rick considers it a great honor and privilege to be invited into client's journeys. He uses a variety of therapeutic approaches to tailor-make a counseling experience along with his clients that address their specific needs, and believes therapy should be warm, supportive, challenging, invigorating, fulfilling, and from time to time even a little fun. Rick works closely with other health care professionals involved in a client's life as well.
With a keen clinical eye and an appreciation for research backed techniques that never dismiss the art and humanity of a person's lived experience, Rick has worked in community mental health centers, university counseling centers, hospitals, outpatient clinics, and corporate psychology settings.
The former Director of Wellness at the University of Denver and a past president of the Colorado Psychological Association , Rick has worked in variety of capacities in and beyond Colorado to promote the field of psychology, train Master's and Doctoral level therapists, and advocate for state and federal legislation promoting mental health. He was instrumental in designing two state Mental Health Practice Acts ten years apart that regulate the scopes of practice and safety administration for all mental health professionals. Rick has taught Master's and Doctoral level courses, supervised clinicians, led suicide prevention non-profit organizations, and done leadership and team training for various organizations in the public and private sectors. He writes and speaks on topics related to mental health in both mass media publications and professional journals.
